Something like three years ago I PMed Shane Atwood about getting a knife from him. I think I was initially interested in his Rhino folder (I still am), and Shane added me to the list... I completely forgot about the order, then in May I got a PM from Shane saying that it was time, and to start thinking about what I wanted. So I went and dug through his IG feed and checked out what he was making. The Freedom Fighter flipper was one of his new models, and I had to have it.
Specs:
Blade: 3.5"
OAL: 8"
Steel: Nichols Boomerang San Mai with a XHP Core
Weight: 6.1oz
There's something really cool about working with a maker that will design a knife around what you want, specifically. The terms in this hobby have gotten so convoluted between customs, midtechs, productions, and god knows what else... But this is truly a custom knife, made by hand, by one guy, to a custom set of specifications. Handmade knife? Bespoke Knife? Who knows... but I like the way Shane does it.
I love the way San Mai looks, topographic, and what not. I also really love that it gives you a working edge. XHP is my favorite steel, and having it in this sammich is awesome. Shane grinds these things thinnnnnn and it's wickedly sharp.
The handles are some of Ghost Carbon Fiber's smoked marbled CF, they were selling pieces in a flash sale a few months back and I snagged a few. Its awesome stuff. I'm a big fan of how Shane puts the little dividers in the dove tail, and the orange peeled Zirc is perfect. There are more hot spots on a banana than on this handle.
SKK Pivot, etc etc... Just another closer look.
The backspacer is two pieces of San Mai with Shane's "Alcatraz" pin setup in between. Awesome lines.
And lastly, Shane ususlly marks the blade, but with the damascus he decided to etch the inside of the backspacer... Great touch.
As of NOW Shane's books are still open, I highly recommend that you go and get on them. I've owned some top-tier knives before, and his fits cozily in at the top.
Hope you all enjoyed it!
