ebay has some Shapleigh cattle knives for around $75? They seem like nice pieces but all I have to go by is pic on the web.

Anyone have experience with Shapleighs? Walk and talk, fit and finish? Is it a good buy? TIA

I have a few shapleighs in my collection. They're a little worn, but overall they seem like a decent knife. I haven't used them at all, but the ones I have seem pretty well put together.

Hi fella's:),

I would ask a lot of questions before buying one. Shapeigh is an older brand that is long gone. I've seen the Cattle patterns, and they're not like any older one's I've seen.

Judging from were their comming from, etc... I'd guess their in the BullDog quality range.

Just some musing's:D:).

Thanks guys.
The blurb says they are a 'warehouse find' from the factory in Germany that produced them for Shapleigh. Sounds OK. Says they come with a cert. of authenticity from Jim Parker who says they were made somewhere between late 40's and early 50's. Sounds good.
Also says parker valued them at around $250 yet the seller is asking $75? Not so good?

If you like them, then it's worth the money:), but for investment purpose's....
I'd personally ask Bernard's about their age:D:).

Not that this is the case but, a lot of times a company buyer does come across the parts of knives in an old warehouse and then they are assembled. I don't really know about these Shapleigh knives that are surfacing. Parker would be the one to talk to.

I have collected antique pocket knives for 30 years and have looked at countless thousands of old knives, also have owned and researched many old cutlery catalogs. NEVER have I seen an older Shapleigh marked knife that was made in Germany. If they were genuine old knives "from a warehouse", I would think that I would have seen at least one orignal example by now. I have seen original Simmons knives marked Germany but not Shapleigh.

I would agree with previous posters, quality is probably good, in line with Bulldog (IMHO, probably off the same production line).

As far as the "values" claimed in the $250 range or whatever, those are values made up by Jim Parker, the same person selling the knives for the lower prices.

You would probably get similar quality and perfromance from a bulldog for a lower price. Bulldogs are amazing values for the money if you buy direct from Parkers.
