They are supposedly made by Plumb. The etched design sure fetches a high premium over the current price of a vintage Plumb hatchet with similar steel and quality.

Well, the recent offering reached $422.00

An interesting fact I noticed is that the previous one selling for $405.00 AND the one ending tonight were BOTH bought by the same bidder.

Not sure that means anything, other than he's a "hoarder" maybe! :D

By the way,....I'd expect that some makers may very well ADD an interesting design into the face of at least some of theie hatchets in the future (to get a higher marketable price), .....especially after seeing what folks will pay for a purtied up side.

Also, if Plumb did indeed make these up back then,....it would appear the design was stamped into the steel,.....probably while being hot formed/forged as it looks pretty deep. (unlike the designs pictured below)

Yeah those bring big money like the Black Raven. Last year someone listed a set of four different sportsmen axes for $1000. Embossed axes in general have a strong collector market.
