Shapton 16k or strop compound as finisher?

I sharpen my knives with an Edge Pro Apex. My finishing stone right now is a Shapton 8k Glass. My knife is scary sharp and very polished with some fine scratches still in showing to the naked eye.
If I spend more time on the 8k will I get rid of those or should I spend more time on the previous stones?

OR
Should I buy the Shapton 16k in hopes of a sharper edge that is shinier and have less/no visiable scratches?

OR

Should I buy a compound/spray to put on my leather strops to follow my Shapton 8k instead? If so what one?

If you want the scratch marks removed, you need to go back to the lower grit stones and work out all previous scratch marks with each stone, back up to your 8K. If the marks are made by the 800 grit stone, then the 1000 grit stone should remove all those scratch marks. Then the 1200 stone should remove the 1000 grit marks, and so on and so on until you get to your 8K stone, which should not show any marks to the naked eye. This is only if you want a mirror finish on your blade. Not necessary if you are just looking for a scary sharp blade.

Blessings,

Omar

^ good advices.

For mirror & keep the V edge scary-sharp, I would buy Shapton 16K & optionally 30K stones. Strop with sub-micron abrasives is the less expensive way to get beyond naked eyes mirror edge; however that takes skill & compromises on slightly convex edge & soft bevel shoulder. If you want to give strop a try, buy some 0.5 to 0.1 micron diamond film on glass for EP. Hard-backing (glass) minimizes convex/round your edge.

Hey fellow Georgian. I hope you and your family didn't get hit with any of the recent tornadoes.
When I proceed to the next stone, my edge usually looks to my nakes eye that the scratch pattern changed from the previous stone. I don't know if that means that all the scratches were removed or that the new stone just covered most of the scratches. Idk if that makes sense.

Well that answers some of my questions. Thanks for the thread, JoePa150.

The next scratch pattern should replace or cover up the previous scratch patterns.

Thanks for asking. We escaped all the bad weather. Only had a hard rain shower, which we needed anyway. A tornado touched down in Dallas, but on the other side of the county from us, and only damaged some trees, and no structures. We were blessed when compared to some of the other areas north of us.

Omar

So if I were to buy a higher grit to follow up after the 8k Shapton Glass, here are my options.

Shapton 16k Glass
Nubatama Bamboo 10k
Ozuku Asagi Natural Stone
Imanishi 10K
