shapton glass, lapping?

Im curious. I have not used the shapton glass stones. Do they require as much lapping as any other stone or are they slower to dish?

I only have limited experience with them, but they seemed to stay flat much longer than a standard water stone.

I don't have the Sharpton myself but they have been recommended often here as the go-to stones. They do dish though, maybe slower than some but they do. Since lapping is recommended before (or after) each sharpening session anyway, it does not really matter much (off note, I have a 3000 Chosera that is quite hard/ceramic like and if I test it after one sharpening with pencil lines, you would be surprised!). You will need a diamond lapping stone. It seems that the Atoma 400 is recommended for about 500 and up, the Atoma 140 for coarser stones and bevel set or reprofiling. Jason here on BF has experience with those stones and I bet many others here too.

Common waterstone maintenance practice is to flatten before each sharpening. You want your stones flat not dished.

It does not matter how hard or soft the stone is, it will wear and need to be flattened. Flattening before each sharpening keeps it from being a PITA. Let a glass stone dish out once and you will understand why you will never want to let that happen again. The Atoma 140 or 400 works well for lapping these stones, the later causing less stone wear and better texture on 1000 and higher stones.

The wear rate is by a per sharpening basis and not the lifetime of the stone. Harder stones allow you to finish your sharpening without having to lap half way through unlike softer stones that need impeccable technique or constant lapping. They sharpen faster and wear slower than most waterstones but still require preventative maintenance to keep them working as they should.

Would the DMT XC diamond stone (continuous) be sufficient for lapping shapton glass stones for the edge pro?

I realize it probably isn't 'ideal' but would it give acceptable performance?

Only the DMT XXC is rated for lapping all other DMT plates are used at your own risk.

Part of my EP "kit" for a time was a 6x2 DMT Coarse I used both for reprofiling and keeping the EP stones lapped...

... as mentioned, it's not a recommended use, but mine held up fine and did the job. I've also used a 6x2 DMT XC "interrupted surface" stone to lap a set of Choseras (cut for the W.E.)... so would think the XC "continuos" should do just fine.
