I have a few of the Shapton Glass stones, and really like them. Looking at the Shapton Pro series, they seem a little bit more like traditional water stones. Has anybody used them? Any opnions? Thanks guys.

I have not used them but plan to get the 220, 1k, 5k pro stones. From the research I have done they are better with carbon steels but don't seem to have any issues with more wear resistant steels.

Thanks man, appreciate the help. I just plan on geting like a 1K, 5K, and trying them out. I think that they would be a good combo for my PM's in S30v, and VG-10's.

If your just gonna get a couple I would actually get the 320 , 1500 and 5000. Little more versatile.

Heres a breakdown of the low 3:
The 120 ive found to be a bit faster than the atoma 140 with some pressure.
The 220 is the hardest of the low grit stones , great for razors
The 320 is the softest , no slouch either

Are you an EP user or freehand?

Good to know. As for the wear rate of the stones how would they compare to other stones?

I am freehanding. But I really don't feel the need for a lower grit stone in those, I have my DMT's, should I need to hog off some steel. Which is why I was thinking a 1k/5k, for finishing, and maintenance. Do my choices make any more sense, with my DMT's thrown in the mix?

Would also like to know more about the wear rate of these.

Well , jumping from DMT stones to waterstones is problematic. They leave scratches much deeper than their implied "grit". This makes diamond (atomas and other diamond plates included) scratch removal difficult with the 1k shapton. And can leave problems that are difficult to troubleshoot later one , particulairly at the 5k level. I would definitely be eyeballing a 220 or 320 fwiw.

The 1500 sets you up a little better for the 5k imo , its quite a bit harder than the 1k , and softer than the 2k , its an underrated stone. I never use to use it much but im using it more and more and actually skipping the 2k.

Well I haven't wore any out yet , possibly because I have all three , and I am only using EP sized pieces.

Ive least experience with the 120 , I find it fast but messy , seems to wear fairly quickly. Only used it a handful of times. Id be interested to see how it holds up under the hands of Jason.
The 220 is quickly becoming my favorite , hard yet still fast , needs less flattening than the 320 or 120 stones. I find myself reaching for this stone most often.
The 320 is the softest yet surprisingly fast , the slowest of the 3 by comparison. It also requires the most flattening , on the EP I flatten before making my final couple passes so the edge is true for the 1k , not an issue freehanding where you have some leeway built in. I used to use this stone the most before I got more experience with the 220.

I have the full lineup of pro stones , but everytime I pick them up I learn something new , ultimately im sure you will be happy whichever way you go.

Jason I don't have a lot to compare to right now , I have some Nubatamas coming and will be picking up the Choseras from Ken at some point in the future. Obviously all three of them destroy the stock EP stuff in terms of performance. Even wear rates are much better.

Thanks for the info. I'm guessing you went with the 150 bamboo? I know that stone fairly well so it will be interesting to hear your comparison.

As for those diamond scratches I would say its not a big deal. The 1k pro is coarse enough to make them of minimal concern.

I have the 1000 and 2000 Shapton Pro's and a 4000 Shapton Glass. The Pro stones work pretty well on everything I've used them for so far: Super Blue, Blue #1, S30V, S90V, M390, ZDP-189 and various lower quality stainless steels. The 1000 Shapton Pro does a great job of getting rid of scratches left over from diamonds, though if you are going from a very low grit diamond stone (e.g. Atoma 140 or DMT Extra Extra Coarse) then you might want a lower grit stone (I use a Chosera 400) as an intermediate stone.

I've taken a ZDP-189 Spyderco to a mirror edge using a Shapton 1000 Pro as part of my progression, and it was a pretty integral part in getting rid of the diamond scratches left over from a 45 micron stone.
