Shaptons for reprofiling?

Are the 220 and 320 Shapton Glass stones good for reprofile work? I'm not happy with my cheap 140 diamond plate and I'm looking for alternatives. I currently have all of the Shaptons from 500-8000k.

What stone would you recommend for reprofiling?

My steels are S30V, M4, M390, and S110V.

Thank you.

Well let me say this about that :

Shapton 120 ?

nah dude, nah only good for taking the coarse scratches out after using the diamond file

The super extra mother coarse diamond file ?
nah dude, nah
only good for cleaning up the surface after the grind stone

The grind stone ?
'ell yah !
Cool and aggressive . . . ~46 to 60 grit Norton 8 inch 3X

Or maybe better, safer quicker to send it to one of the pro guys on this forum and have them do it right . . . I just don't know any better.

PS :
perhaps I over reacted . . . depends on what you mean by "reprofile" . . . I tend to take off a fair amount of blade thickness (at least down near the edge) on about anything that falls into my evil little paws.

I use the CKTG 140 diamond plate for reprofiling and it does great even with s90v. Then it's the 320 and 500 Shaptons.

PPS :
(I don't know why I like to do that)

I will say even small thickness changes / changing the edge bevel shallower from the stock angle, while going to town quite vigorously with a Shapton 120 stone on the Edge Pro, on the M4 and the S110V was very slow going and I am not even talking about thinning the material behind the edge which would take considerably longer . . . I am just saying changing the angle shallower . . .

So I found the Shapton 120 not really practical for those two steels and just adequate for sharpening the existing edge bevel.

Coarse diamonds are a must at a minimum or powered equipment.

I find the Shapton Glass 120 to be a very good bevel setting stone, chews through high alloy steels and stays flat for longer than most coarse stones. A little tough to flatten because its a very hard stone, so its best to use a loose grit and a flat surface. Shapton sells a small "puck" and lapping powder to be used on the 120-320 stones and IMO the easiest route for maintenance of the coarse glass stones.

Thank you all for the feedback. Jason, if I could I would like to ask a follow-up question.

What's the scratch pattern like with the 120? And my dissatisfaction with my diamond plate comes from a very deep and aggressive scratch pattern. I would assume that the 120 stone is much more uniform and not quite as deep?

Thank you again.

And, my apologies. I forgot to give the detail that I'm using the edge pro size of these stones.

complicated ?

I'm not complaining . . . I enjoy all this silliness but it must be overwhelming for people who just want to get on with it.

I forgot to give the detail that I'm using the edge pro size of these stones.

For what it is worth, not sure if this is a REAL Shapton,
My "Shapton" 120 ??glass?? stone for the Edge Pro is a Jende . . . the only thing I could find at the time. I ordered it from over seas since my vendor here could not get them for months and months.

It can go a little soft on me if not allowed to have access to lots of air between sharpening days and I wouldn't call it all that hard (tends to release grit especially when wet for too long)(I never submerge just splash and go). I am just glad to have anything 120 that I can put in my Edge Pro at this stage.

PS: my large 120 stone mentioned/shown earlier is a Shapton Pro which I am led to believe is different than the Shapton Glass.

Looks like the Shapton 120 is not offered in the Edge Pro size, only 220 and up.

Yeah, I don't see the 120 Glass in an EP size either. You might be able to contact Ken Schwarts and have a customs one cut.

Wowbagger,

Pretty sure that's a Pro stone.

Thank you for responding.

I keep threatening to get some diamond Edge Pro . . . guess this is another good argument to do just that.

Yes it is all coming back to me now. They were out of the 220 for months so I ordered the 120 from some one else until the 220 back in stock. My original set came with 500, 1000, and 4000.
