I’d like to share one of my recent pieces from Noblie Custom Knives and hear your thoughts.
This is a Damascus dagger I made as a collector / art piece, with a strong focus on decorative handwork. I used hand engraving, gilding, garnet accents, and a carved wood handle, and my goal was to make all of those elements feel like one composition rather than separate features competing for attention.
For me, the hardest part in a project like this is always balance. Damascus already has a lot of visual movement, so the engraving and gold work have to support the blade, not overpower it. I wanted the steel pattern to stay alive and visible, while the gilded ornament adds contrast and a more formal character.
I also spent a lot of time on the handle and fittings. The carved wood gives warmth and texture, which helps balance the metal parts. The sculpted guard and pommel were meant to give the dagger a stronger personality and tie the whole design together.
The scabbard was made as part of the same idea from the beginning, not as an afterthought. I tried to carry the same rhythm and visual language into it, so the dagger and scabbard work as a complete set.
Pieces like this are always a mix of several disciplines in one build — blade work, engraving, gilding, carving, stone setting, and final fit. That challenge is exactly what I enjoy.
I’d be glad to hear honest feedback from fellow makers and collectors.
Do you think the level of ornamentation fits this style of Damascus dagger, or would you prefer a cleaner blade treatment?
Thanks for looking.
