one going on in the bay currently.... I wonder if these people realize they dont have to buy things on there

What are they jumping?
Thing that kills me is people wanting big money for something but looks like they are posting pictures off a flip phone. And some of the people are out of they’re minds with the value they put on some of these knives.

I think they figure if someone else is bidding it must be worth it.

I understand what "jumped the shark" means with respect to television shows that ran past when they should have been canceled, but I'm not seeing the connection to using the meme for ebay auctions. Does it imply that someone is trying to sell something that people used to want, but no one wants anymore?

Yea I don’t know about the Fonz, but my interpretation of sharking was a shark feeding frenzy on an item not worth the highest bid. Happened to me last night on a sheath that went for probably twice its value.

I took it to mean they didn’t know when to stop (bidding). And way over bid.

Like the TV shows that didn’t know when to stop making new episodes.

Or know when to quit with the laugh track.

Term comes from the source eveled mentioned. I started using it because I used to read bill simmons page 2 article in espn magazine. Page 2 was a sports column in the early 2000s that was full of humor and sarcasm. Simmons was always referring to athletes, coaches and celebrities "jumping the shark" with their career. It was never and injury or death of a family member. It was always something that was self inflicted and usually funny or stupid.
So that is how it changed from a description of a moment in time, to a phrase describing people.
A shark jumping contest is a group of people doing something foolish, for foolish results. The shark jumping contest inevitably ends with someone getting eaten by the shark.

The bay, as an auction site, jumped the shark long ago. The evidence of such, is the number of shark jumping contests you can find on there.

Not but related but I sold a networking switch that I purchased by mistake, but I had opened it and could not return it. I posted it for 1/2 the price I paid for it. It sold for 3 times more than I paid for it. Never bid on something without doing research
