I am toying with an idea of buying a BK-7 and modifying it to look like this:

Can anyone tell me if there is anything inherently weak in such a design? I want to be well-suited to kitchen duties, good overall utility (no skinning), as well as being a decent stabber.

Whatcha think?

hwy,
Nah I dont think that it is a weak design at all...It does take somewhat from its stabbing ability, but the wharncliffe designs make awesome weapons IMHO..One of the more learned guy's will be stepping up soon to answer ya better..

BTW...I had the same thought of doing a similar mod to my BK7...Planned on doing it with a dremel with a cut-off tool...Have the blade sitting in a bit of water and use the extended thingy on the dremel to keep the heat down...Havent gotten around to it yet though

This will weaken the tip. You'd be grinding through the blades ground (already thin) portion.

I think the tip would be weaker since it wont be as close to the spine of the blade where it's thicker

Of course it'll be weaker than it was, but it'll still be much stronger than most knives. How strong do you need it?

I see no advantage, as the cutting edge remains the same, minus the part you cut off. The tip will be weaker. But if that's what you want, go for it.

I dislike the raised edge belly (if I was to use a knife for skinning, it wouldn't be a 7-incher). I don't like it for stabbing or even for food preparation. Obviously, if BRKT offered a modified wharncliffe profile, I would prefer to buy a ready-made (I am not a master of mechanical tools), but since it is not available, I figure I can stand a risk of losing ~$50 on an experiment. ;)

Go for it I say. I would'nt worry about the tip too much unless you plan on prying your way out of an collapsed building.
There is some statisfaction on successfully modifying something to your liking.
Just make sure to go slow. Your biggest worry is mucking up the temper , otherwise it should be a fun project.
Be sure to post pics when done please :D

Will do. It won't be too soon, as I am getting ready for some multi-week business trips, but in my spare time (:D) I will start working on it.
