Guys Im sure its been beat to death on here in the past. I have been trying to answer my own question, but there is so much information on these knives Im getting lost. Im looking for a skinning knife, that will be easy to sharpen, but hold a good edge. I know there are different years these were made. But I would like to know, how do you tell which ones are good and which ones are not? Thanks

Yes, they are readily available on that big auction site. Here's one I rehandled in elk antler, but sold. I'm gonna have to mod another for myself.

Barry's knife is the USA version made of carbon steel. If you find one marked SCHRADE + then it is made of stainless steel. Both are fine for skinning, but the carbon steel is easier to touch up in the field. I have seen an exact copy made by Bear & Son still stocked at Ace Hardware stores - haven't used on to compare, but they are USA made. OH

Ps Barry, that is a fine looking stag handle on your Sharpfinger!

Thanks guys. I have my eyes on one now so we will see if I end up with it or not. I had a puma about 10 years ago that was lost in a house explosion. My dad bought it in the 70's, then handed it down to me. I belive thats probably the best skinning knife i have ever had. It was about 8" long when open, a little heavy, but not to heavy. I have seen several times we would sharpen it before season, skin 5 or 6 deer and that thing would still try to shave. One time it was 5 deer and a hog and it would still shave. What I would give to have that knife back. Anywho, thanks for the info guys.

I just picked up a donor knife & sheath in exc. condition for under $20 on the auction site. Now where'd I put that elk horn?

Dang, just when I was thinking I'd accounted for 'most everything there was to Want....

I really like my Schrade Sharp Finger! Got a used one off the big auction site, in good shape, for about 25 bucks. I'm sorry I waited all these years, as this is a darn fine knife. Amazing steel, handles well, and carries well on the belt.
