Sharp fixed cut thru Sheath?

This question has gone thru my mind for quite a while.

I see that most fixed blade sheaths are made of leather, which can be cut thru with a knife.

So, when you carry a fixed blade in a leather sheath, wouldnt it cut thru the sheath with some pressure?

No, because

1) the sheath will not let the knife in deep enough - the handle's shape and size prevents that and
2) there's a plastic, wood or similar inner liner in the sheath that isn't so easily pierced.

:)

Of course, if the sheath is poorly constructed, then, sure, the knife can cut right through it in the right (wrong) circumstances, and that could be dangerous.

Yes this can be a problem. I have had my Busse Game warden come through two of the inexpensive pouch sheaths sold by the Company store for them.

Same issue sheath caught on the handle to my chair as I was sitting down, lift the sheath and rotating it backwards. I have cut up shirt and gouged chair handles to prove it.

So yes it can be a problem.

Growing up in Texas... around lots of hunting and ranching I have heard of guys getting thrown off horseback and having their sheathed fixed blade being pushed through its sheath (by your ribcage) if you land just wrong.

Of course, you could also drown in a 5 gallon bucket... or drown on your vomit in your sleep.... but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it (weak pun intended).

I have some sheaths by chuddybear and leatherman... they are seriously heavy-duty.

Any thing man made is prone to failure given the right circumstances. If you really, really worry about it, go kydex. If you destroy a quality made kydex sheath, the blade poking through is the least of your worries. I have made many leather sheaths and used them daily with no problems, but I have seen much cheaper leather sheaths get the run through real fast. Usually the flimsy stuff sold with some hunting knives (old Case and Buck hunting knives my dad had come to mind). If you want leather, the right construction can limit the chances of a run through, but like I said, given the right combination of things, anything is possible.
