sharp-ing the dodo

been meaning to do this for awhile. did a quick search on sharpening the dodo, with the following general results: send it back to factory. the fine cutting edge is gone from the curve just before the tip and i want it back! on the other hand, i don't want to do it wrong and lose the point. i think i'm going to get another one and send my current blade for a home visit. then vice versa. just in case, however: we're talking s30v here; if i try to tune up the curves, particularly the curve near the tip, with a ceramic rod, do i really stand a good chance of dorking the tip? or does it take a diamond surface? any and all help appreciated.

I sharpen my Dodo with the edges of the Sharpmaker rods. I take it slow and do my best to keep the cutting edge perpendicular to the rod, takes a bit of practice but you get into it pretty quick. I go really slow near the tip. Just take it slow until you figure it out, you'll get comfortable with it pretty quick. It's a knife, not rocket science ;)

I use a fine DMT serrated knife sharpener on my SPOT. The sharpener tapers towrs the tip, so you're less likely to wear the tip away at all. On knives where I have managed to blunt the tip, I reprofil the tip using the medium sharpmakers fishing hook sharpener; works really well for folders (may take some time, bit worth it).

If you search my posts, you'll see where I damaged the edge of my Dodo a couple months back. I've managed to bring the hook area back to 85%-90% of where it was by carefully using the corners of the sharpmaker triangles in the base (I didn't trust myself to try the rods freehand). The belly part of the blade is more like 99%+.

I've been very careful to keep the edge perpendicular to the rod all through the curve(s) which isn't the easiest with the Dodo. I've also done my best to keep the tip from making much contact with the rods -- it's still got a sharp "point."

I have a Dodo on the way. I am hoping I won't have too much trouble sharpening it. :(

I use a Lansky clamp system for my knives. I have a cheapie knife with a 1.25" hook shaped blade and didn't have any problems using the Lansky on it. The flat hones didn't make full contact with the blade edge but it came out pretty uniform. I also have a EZ Lap Diamond rod but my freehand sharpening skills are pretty bad. I may come up with a way to rig the EZ Lap Diamond rod to the Lansky.

I have been keeping my SE Dodo sharp by using the medium Sharpmaker rods. The fine rods seem to not like the S30V very much.

My Native with S30V turns out like a razor that I have been able to shave with after I use the fine rods. Once I switch to the fine rods, I apply slight pressure down into the stone and make at least 20 passes on each side, then I back the pressure off to the point where it's just touching the stone and do the same thing... nasty
