Is it just me? Over the years I've bought maybe a dozen Spyderco knives and cut myself with every one. My dad gave me my first knife when I was 6 or 7, a long time ago, and I've always carried a pocket knife of some kind, without endangering myself or others. I brought home a new J.D.Smith the other day - sitting at my desk, playing with it, talking on the phone. I got up to go to the kitchen, blood's running down my leg - I was wearing shorts. Is it just me?

No, it happens to us all. But, I feel a Spyderco is not truely yours until you bleed on it. Consider it a sacrifice to the Spyder for good luck.

I'm usually not too bad, but my Starmate's been slicing me to bits lately. That factory edge is so scary (even after a few weeks of use) that it's not even very painful, just makes a mess and I feel dumb. I think it's the straight shape of the handle, been giving me trouble compared to the curve of the Police, AFCK, Military, etc. when I'm practicing opening and manipulating the knife.

But yeah, if I own a knife and it hasn't "bitten" me a few times, that's my cue that I need to handle it more.

Hmmmm. I'm really surprized that knife "experts" such as yourselves would cut yourself. I never cut myself, well hardly ever, well not more than twice a week, most weeks, sometimes more.

I wonder what the Psychologists would say about people that play with things that hurt them and continue to do so even more?

Sal, you should have seen what your people were going to do to your computer when I was buying my J.D.Smith... talk about hurting things that hurt you....

Geez...glad im not the only one.... That was I think the first thing i managed to cut with my 50/50 endura... Im suprised the serations didnt hurt more than they did....

Nicks are good, they give character to a knife. Just keep blood out of the moving parts! =8)

My confidence in my mediocre sharpening abilities gets a boost every time I find a nick I don't remember making. If you can't feel the cut, you've got a good edge. I wouldn't exactly recommend testing one's edges like this, though...

I cut open a few boxes at work yesterday, when I noticed that I had a bit of tape stuck to the blade of my Military.... no problem, .... so I just wiped the blade across my jeans to "flick" the tape off.
Never felt it til a co-worker said "What happened to you!"

Here's a "virtual Band-aid" for everyone:

Nice bandage! I needed it last night.

I decided to take my Civilian on my neighborhood walk since I haven't carried it in over a month. In checking it and making sure it was opening and closing well, it nicked me (just a little nip). Tiny bandage overnight and taken off this morning took care of it.

Do you think it wants to get out more? Made me feel klutzy - again!

I always seem to watch myself in s-l-o-w motion as I make the stupid move and proceed to slice myself open.

On a side note, I always end up cutting myself within a week of picking up a new knife. Methinks the blade needs a taste of blood.

*drip drip*

*doh!*

Count me in there too. I put a nice slice on my thigh with my Merlin. I had just finished touching up the little bit of Plain Edge at the tip of the blade, and was thinking that I didn't do a good job, because it wouldn't shave hair like the factory edge. For some reason I still haven't figured out, I set the tip of the blade on my thigh, the very part I didn't think was all that sharp. I then moved the knife, with only the weight of the knife on my skin, a nice red line appeared. I didn't feel a freaking thing!

Usually I just close the blade on my finger tip. This seems to have taken me to a new level of absent mindedness.

I need a new test to measure sharpness. Obiously the shaving thing isn't as accurate as I thought.

YES!!!!!!! I'M NOT ALONE!!bahahaha.

I figured that most knife-lovers knicked themselves quite a bit..but just didn't comment on it seeing as they really don't care....i'm glad i was right.

How many of you have tried closing the Cricket (plain/serrated, doesn't matter!

) one-handedly without looking? Because of the extra-thin blade, the edge is even sharper than the rest of the Spyderco lineup, if at all possible!!

Well, once again, you won't feel a thing if your finger should be partially in the way! And BOY, does it bleed NICELY!!!

STANDARD DISCLAIMER: I did it on purpose to test the sharpness!!

BTW, a friend of mine picked up a BlackHawk (plainedge) at a VERY good price. What he didn't see at that time, is that the blade had a bit of play when closed, so the tip would "ride" out of the handle when closed...

So, when he sat down one time, the exposed tip caught on his pants, opened further, and went straight into his leg as he sat down. And, to make things even worse, this BlackHawk fully adhered to the Spyderco sharpness policy!

This is his FAVOURITE Spydie model today...

My new pink Delica drew quite a bit of blood the first day I had it. I had trouble closing it, the blade would stick when I released the lock. So I gave it a little shake to help it along. This, of course, sent the serrated blade deep into my knuckle. Quite a bit of blood, plus the indignity of being done in by a pink knife.

Gosh, those Spydies are sharp out of the box!

Sorry 'bout the cuts. It's an ingredient that we add to the steel we use; Vampire F3V.

You think you got problems- I am taking blood thinners, I will for the rest of my life. You should see me bleed! It hasn't modified my nicking tendancies much though.
