Hello,

after reading outstanding and informative review on sharpening supersteels https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/what-edge-angle-is-good-for-supersteels.1732796/ I realized that I do need a diamond stone to sharpen M390 chef knife to deal with Vanadium in the blade. For the budget reasons I was looking for a middle grade plate and I am contemplating between Sharpal 156N or 162N stones. The difference is in size - 6 inch vs 8 inch. I reason that 6 inch may fit into Ruixin which I expect delivery from China but I understand that it is much easier to free-hand on 8 inch plate. Do you have any observations on performance of Sharpal product and what would you recommend size-vice?

The Sharpal stones are great, they are my main stones along with a spyderco medium. However I think they would be too heavy to use with an edge pro type system. Work amazing for freehand, and they come with an angle guide, if you'd want to try freehanding.

I currently can afford only one. Which one do you use the most? How long diamonds will last on them?

I use the 6 inch the most, because I take it everywhere with me. It's in my lunchbox so on break or lunch I can touch up knives or sharpen other peoples if they want.

I generally use the 8 inch for kitchen knives.

No problem! I forgot to say anything about how long they'll last. Truth is, I dont know. I've had mine a short while, but have reprofiled and sharpened quite a few knives and they're holding up great. They have a 3 year warranty as well. Just don't use a lot of pressure and you should be fine.

I also have a Norton crystolon coarse/fine that I can use if I really need to take off a lot of metal fast.

I got Norton crystolon and it works beautifully! Does diamond plate cut faster or about the same? Do you use Norton to save your diamond plates or it works better in some respect?

Aslo - did you find 8 inch much more comfortable for kitchen knives (those are the only knives I have) or marginally better than 6 inch?

The Norton will, since you can use a lot of pressure to help the stone take off metal and for the stone to expose fresh abrasive. If you're not reprofiling though the diamonds imo are better. Less mess, cut very efficiently, and are easy to maintain.
