sharpen a chisel grind

hey ya'll, i usually lurk in the knifemaker area bu just recently realized that there are forums other than that one lol... i bought a CRKT m16-12z, which, if you don't know, is a tanto-point, chisel ground blade. i love the knife but can't get it sharp with my meagre means. any suggestions?

imho the best way to learn to sharpen CG blades is to go to the emerson knife website (emersonknives.com IIRC) they have a section on sharpening CG's w/pics & stuff.

Welcome to the party!!!

I sharpen it like any other knife. The micro-edge bevel I create on the straight (chisel) edge will hardly be noticed and in fact may help cutting control. I use a Spyderco Sharpmaker and sharpen both plain and serrated the same way. You are removing such a tiny bit of steel from the blade that keeping the chisel edge side flat isn't a concern.

The easiest way would be to just take a Sharpmaker or similar and adjust it by putting a block under one side so it was just as asymmetric as the edge bevel and now just sharpen as normal.

DGG, i havn't tried very much, just a fine(-ish) diamond stone, and a fine belt on a belt sander. just so you know, i kept the blade cool on the belt, and used very light pressure, so i don't think i killed the temper... i think emerson's method is probably what i'll go with for the moment... thanks much guys.

Good luck with your sharpening, let us know how it works out. I don't think there is a "best way". Some are more technical (ie expensive) and will do the job quicker. Spyderco has more chisel grinds than anyone I know (most of their serrated models are flat on one side) and they recommend sharpening both sides with their Spyderco Sharpmaker. It works very well for me.

With a dull edge I start using a course DMT whetstone until I have a BURR or sharp edge. They I proceed to finer grit rods ending with a leather strop/hone to remove any remaining BURR and polish the micro-Bevel edge.

It isn't a very quick process but if I try to hop over a step it never works.
 
well, imho a flat benchstone is a lot easier to sharpen a CG on than a sharpmaker (not that i dont love SM's) especially a tanto blade, to me using a sharpmaker on a CG is the long way around the barn, but i am pretty good at freehand sharpening.

just whatever works for you.
 
hey, sry to ressurect a somewhat-aged thread, but i figgerd i'd let ya'll know what i ended up doing. I used my bench stone, then stropped on the cardboard back of a notebook. this got it sharp enough to take hair of my arm, but not hair-popping sharp yet. i think i'll be able to get it there with some more perseverance though.

garageboy, i think we're talkin about the same critter. i've heard it both ways.
