I've got two diamond stones and a strop. Can I bring a dull edge mistress back to sharp on a stone? Keeping the zero edge?

With the proper wrist action, yes. The likelihood of that, not much. Get a mousepad/ strip of leather and some different grits of sandpaper for a better chance of getting it done near right.

Yeah, mousepad and sandpaper. That is what I use for my folders, very easy and basically idiot proof:thumbup:

I'm just going to throw this out there. I have NO IDEA what it would cost, but I think if I was going to convex a Battle Mistress I would send her out to one of the fine gentlemen who earn money doing that. That is a lot of steel to shave away and alot of opportunity to screw up a great knife.

Maintaining the edge would be different. But reprofiling....not me. YMMV.

I didn't know we could use postage!!! ;) :D

+1 on that.

I just discovered the ease of the mousepad/sandpaper method and man you can get an edge to scary sharp almost instantly and it's not nearly as hard as with stones or even most sharpeners.

Oh, I thought he was talking about a NMFBMLE.

I am. Its already convexed. I'm not trying to reprofile. Just maintain. So with pad and paper does the spine lead, like on a strop? Or does the edge lead like on a stone. I use an edge leading swoop when I use my stones.

I do it with the spine leading.

Never tried it the other way. I would think it would cut right through the paper and mousepad though. Maybe I am way off:confused:

Like a strop, you'll cut the paper otherwise.

Edge-Trailing (pull the knife spine-first toward you - for stropping or mousepad and sandpaper)

and

Edge-Leading (push the knife away from you, edge-first - for sharpening on stone)

Use a sharpie on the edge to make sure you're at the correct angle and use light pressure. Most important thing is patience. Good luck!

ETA: The Knives ship free vids that PM66 linked are how I learned.

What grits sandpaper do you guys use with the mousepad? Any tricks to keeping the sandpaper from moving?

Don't use paper (most paper is way to aggressive) on an already convexed knife. All you need is strop bat loaded with black and green compound. With convexing, you always go spine first. PM me if you have any other questions.

+1. Learned the Sharpie trick some years ago from Cliff Stamp, and it really helps any kind of sharpening or reprofiling.

my method was to go to the hard ware store and buy a sheet of glass that was wider than the mousepad and sandpaper. Then I just tape the corners of the sand paper to the glass over the mousepad with duct tape. I re profiled my FBMLE to convex with this method by hand. It took some time for sure.

with an edge that is already convexed, baring any damage to the edge, I don't ever really break out the sand paper to maintain. Just my loaded strop.

If you use the sandpaper (again baring any damage) just a few strokes per side at a high grit will be all you need before moving on to the strop again.
