Could someone please give me a link or something to tutorials, videos, instructions, or something like that. I've searched and searched and keep getting mixed ideas etc. I need entry level instructions. Thanks!

That's easy, grind to a perfect apex and then refine said apex. :D

Okay...maybe it isn't quite that easy, but the concepts are extremely simple. Read some threads in the maintenance sub forum and watch some youtube vids then practice practice practice.

Lee Valley Tools has a number of excellent books on sharpening techniques for practically all kind of cutting tools. Your local library might also have something. Amazon would be another source.

If you have about $200+ to blow and you want to cheat, an Edge Pro Apex will do the trick for you. Its so easy that even I can use it.

Start by telling us what kind of knives you want to learn how to sharpen. This may determine which type of technique and/or sharpener.

Thanks Everyone! Well, mostly folding pocket knives. My dad has a few old bucks and gerbers. Really not sure what the blade steel is though. I figured I'd practice on those. I got him a benchmade griptilian with 154cm for christmas, and got myself a spyderco endura with VG-10. So I want to know what I'm doing before touching the blades on those.

Thanks again!

Also, all I have is a couple of his old whet stones. And on one the surface isn't even. I'm guessing that's a horrible thing to try and sharpen a knife on. Recommendations on stones and/or equipment are very welcome. What about the spyderco sharpmaker? I've read a lot about that.

Do some reading in the link you were given. There is little that hasn't been covered in the last 14 years.

For the stones, grab a handful of sand and find some concrete... Proceed to lap the stones till they're flat. Then you'll have usable stones to sharpen with. If they're old and gunked up with oil, set 'em in acetone, seal the container and shake it up lightly for a few days. No oil on 'em then use water as the lube.

Sharpening is like cooking eggs, some want 'em boiled, others want 'em scrambled. So learn what you want and work towards that, there is no shortage of instructions or gadgets. I'm a fan of the edge pro apex, I sharpen scissors, knives, hatchets, machetes, cuticle cutters you name it.
