Sharpen an AK?

I just received an AK on trade. It is an awesome piece of Infi. It seems quick in the hand and the balance feels great. However, it is by far the least sharp Busse that I have. I want to send it to Ban or Nate to have a satin finish and convex edge put on it, but it will be a user and I don't want to void the warranty as I plan to use it HARD.

I have a sharpmaker with ceramic rods that work well for smaller blades, but I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions.

I know there are many tutorials on putting a convex edge by hand, and I may try that.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

you`ll be there forever if you only use the ceramic rods on a sharpmaker. try a lansky and do the blade in sections

I use DMT Diafolds course/fine/extra fine with good results. The edge is fat, though, and meant to be durable so paper slicing sharp is as far as I go.

Do it like Last Visible Canary does; clamp it into a vise, use the stones like a file.

or, send it back to Garth, tell him what kind of edge you want on it.

Thanks for the responses.

I think I'll get a sharpmaker. I really want to be able to put good edges on my knives.

I want to avoid the machines as I have heard that it can void the warranty.(any thoughts on this?)

I would live a satin, covex AK done by the shop, but I imagine it would cost a lot.

It's not completely clear if using a belt grinder just to sharpen will necessarily void the warranty on the edge. If you don't thin the edge significantly, you would probably be OK. I assume that the extensive work Ban (for example) does means that you would own your own warranty, and have to use common sense, and he will tell you the same. When I reprofile my Busse knives with the HF 1x30, I imagine it's in a gray area. If the edge were to blow out in use, I would send it back to Busse, tell them what I had done and accept their judgment.

Talk to the shop, a simple resharpening may only cost you the postage.

Not as much as you would think, in fact it costs more to have it done right by somebody who knows what they are doing, but they still void the warranty. So if I were you I would send it back to Busse. Email or call them to get a price.

I stand corrected. Just got an E-mail from Amy. You just pay shipping both ways, no charge for sharpening. So as most others said, send it to the shop. Thats what I'm gonna do with mine. :)

Wow!

Back to the shop it is. I was able to use a sharpmaker to bring it shaving sharp on 90% of the blade. The last several inches to the tip were problematic though. I'll probably use it hard then send it in for a tune-up.

Thanks guys!
