Sharpen Benchmade 741 Onslaught

Hey, I have a Benchmade 741 Onslaught knife and I'm considering sharpening it myself. I normally sharpen all my knives myself, but it's a $200 knife, so I think I'm being understandable nervous...

I have a combination stone, but the grits aren't anything great and I'm not a pro yet, so if I was to do it with a wet stone I would have to buy a new set and practice.

My question is, what do you guys think I should do? I've seen a countless number of sharpening tools, some more popular then others (sharpmaker for instance) and I'm wondering what I should be spending my money on?

I really want to get a great edge on this thing.

Also, another option I have seen is to send it back to benchmade and have them sharpen it, but I really would like to do it myself.

Any ideas would be great, even if it's just to have someone locally do it for me.

Thanks.

You might want to look at paper wheels. they work great and they are fast. strop it on yoiur jeans every now and again, and you will be just fine.

my friend if you are worried about sharpening a 200.00 knife then maybe you shouldn't be cutting anything with it

A valid point, granted I do use it, but I take very good care of it as well.

It also has a black coating, and the blade edge is the only part where its rubbed off (obviously), and I don't really want to mess up the look of it.

Thank you and everyone for their input, I welcome more.

It's already apparent that the Sharpmaker is a trust worth and proven tool based off the comments, anything else I should look into?

try ceramic rods and/or steels. the steel isn't that hard and shouldn't be too difficult to get a decent edge on it w/o screwing it up.

if you want to practice with the stones use cheap large kitchen knives.

The sharpmaker is a nice unit, but I prefer the lansky sharpener. It works pretty much like the wicked edge that everyone loves so much, except it's the cheapo version (the wicked edge came later).

If you have a Bass pro shop near, they stock a crapload of lansky stuff.
