Hello all!
I am sure this question has been asked many times, but to safe time and frustration I just post a new thread to get the best results. If there is a similiar thread to this then please just redirect me.
So I am looking for the best way to sharpen my SOG SEAL Team Elite (it has a half serration blade). What sharpening stone should I use, what should I use for the serrations, do I need any finish or polish or oil? I have never sharpened a "real" knife the "real proper" way, I am a real newbie in this but I am willing to learn, I also have a few old knives to practice on. So since I am a noob in this could you please be as specific as possible with all the tools&techniques. Thank you very much.
Also are there any good videos for sharpening out there? I checked out Youtube, but in the comment section I see alot of people saying that this way isn't right etc etc etc.
Thanks so much!
g'day
Danny

What do you have to sharpen with?

Practice on a few knives you don't care about, before you try to sharpen a knife you really like. There is a lot to learn, and many mistakes to make in order to learn it.

Spyderco Sharpmaker, Spyderco Sharpmaker Diamond rods, and follow the DVD instruction video that comes with the tool. In my experience it is the fastest way to (read shortest learning curve) for hand sharpening efforts. You can even purchase it from www.spyderco.com.

Well don't follow that link and buy from them. Everywhere else on the planet sells the SharpMaker for 1/2 that price + or - :)

i might suggest the edge pro apex from chefknivestogo.com, the one witht he chapton stones . i bought one from a different place and then found that one and wished i had it instead. i love my edge pro and after the learning curve i can get knives sharper than they should be, and my fingers agree.

should I get a japanese water stone and a seperate stone for sharpening the serrations?

I recommend AGAINST getting an EdgePro.....

I think EdgePro is the very best non-powered sharpening device on the market today, and I think it was the best knife-related item I've ever bought, but...
If you are only sharpening a couple of knives a couple of times a year, and are NOT a serious knifenut, then spending $250-$350 for a sharpening system is a bit of overkill. It's like buying a Rolls or a Ferrari just to commute to work.

You will be much better served using a Sharpmaker or a DMT Aligner system and the cost to you is less than 1/5th of the EdgePro. Using the DMT will also teach you a lot about how to sharpen a knife so that perhaps in the future, if your knife collection grows, you will better know how to care for it.

I miss my SharpMaker even though my dia-folds work better. Don't ask me why, it was kinda cool.

I keep mine set up on a shelf in the kitchen at all times. Fine stones. Once a week or so I'll stroke my kitchen knives a few times. As it's already out and set up, it only takes a second to do a knife just before I use it, (instead of the regular daily steeling on a borocilicate rod) and I have a good sharp knife again.

A 'plus' to this is that now my wife doesn't hesitate to sharpen her knife either.
