Do any of you guys sharpen the junglas on the sharpmaker? It seems like that 10 inch blade would make it tough to sharpen on those stones but I guess it might be possible. How do you guys do it?

you do the front half of the blade followed by the back half. Either that or lay the stones down on the bottom of the sharpmaker and freehand it.

Yes you can, its a huge blade but it can be done. Make sure you hold the sharpmaker steady so teh blade doesnt pus or tip it over, also hold some of the blade weight off the rods themselves, very light strokes work the best. Its not that hard to do, do let it freak you out.
Now, that being said, get some wet/dry sand paper and a mousepad and convex that bad boy. You think the Junglas is awesome now, wait til you convex it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, when I finally do have to sharpen mine, I'll be doing it on some big benchstones. I don't see the sharpmaker being easy to sharpen such a beast on. It would be really too heavy to try and keep control of it.

So yes I'm sure you "can", but it's probably gonna be difficult given the weight of the blade.

Do a lot of people convex the edge? I have plenty of supplies but I've never been told to convex the edge. Is it pretty easy to do? Benefits?

yup, i sharpen it 50/50. the key is to not let any knife (regardless of size) too dull so you don't end up tired from sharpening it and end up rushing through the process.

convex vs. v-grind is a whole other can of worms. i'm happy with v-grind. i carry a dmt double-sided diamond sharpener in the field and that's perfectly fine for me. i'd rather carry that than a piece of sandpaper and a small piece of mouse pad, etc...i'm less likely to lose the diamond sharpener and the diamonds will out-live me...imho.

I do my Busse Bushwacker and CGFBM which are the same length as Junglas - no problems at all :thumbup:

Yeah.. The easy way to go is stones. Can go anywhere, don't have to line up some system and worry about it, can do on any surface, even yer own leg *if careful* and super fast. I could do about 10 junglas blades hair popin sharp before one of those gagets are set up. I still (Truly) don't know why others don't use the easyest way (except a powered grinder and strop) to put an edge on Anything? I got stones and use em :D edgy

The only reason I don't use stones is because I don't know how. I've tried and all I do is seem to dull the edge. If I could use a bench stone to bring and edge to hair popping sharpness I would be elated, but I didn't have anyone around to teach me how.

You don't need to nowadays. You're on the internet. There's a ton of blogs, stuff on YouTube , advice and tips everywhere. Starting out, get some cheap knives or use kitchen knives , a decent benchstone ( Norton Fine India, Medium Crystolon combo is a good basic stone) and Learn it yourself. It just takes some effort. With effort and trial and error ( and some research) you will gain confidence and experience. Do this on cheap knives first before you commit ( or screw up) a very good knife. I bet those guys Jeff has been in the Jungle with aren't carrying around Angle guides and Gizmos...and their lives depend on a sharp knife. Learn how to use a basic benchstone and you'll be free of the commercial sharpening product handcuffs.
Knife, stone, and some basic hand-to-eye co-ordination goes a long way.
My op.

+1

You won't learn any better from the internet or someone showing you in person unless you practice, practice.... and what's that other thing... PRACTICE. Start on some crappier knives that you don't mind wearing down. If you can get even the cheapest metal to hair popping sharp, you can do it on your nice blades with better/harder to sharpen steel.

Try starting the knife out with the tip on the sharp maker rod and pushing the blade away from you. The opposite of how Sal shows in the instructional DVD.

Now thats some sound advice. No ones gonna tell the world and jungle to. "Hold on till I git a table here on the side of the hill and set my rod angles at the right place so I don't mess up my knife" a stone works anywhere.! And some of those gagits are $100s of waist of money. You could buy 2-3 very good blades for the price of some of those that only hold *sandpaper*?? UGH. A stone has been used for 1000s of years and IMO the only way to get the best edge fast and anywhere. Luv yer post.:D edgy

I havent had to do my Junglas yet, but I use a sharpmaker with my RTAK II, and all my kitchen knives. Works fine.
