One thing to remember, when using the Sharpmaker, is when you reached the tip of the blade on the downward stroke, stop pulling the knife once the tip rests flat on the stone.
The tip will get dull if you let it snap off the stone. That's a mistake I learned the hard way, and had the very same question you're asking now.
I had a very sharp knife, but a rather blunt tip.
For a knife with an already blunt tip, well I guess the same applies. Sharpen the knife as you normally would, but stop pulling once the tip is halfway across the width of the stone.
With very little practice, you can maintain that needle-point tip. Good luck!
