So do you need some kind of special leather to sharpen a knife until now i was honing them but i saw that the tradisional japanese way is with leather. so i just go and buy a piece of leather???:D:D

I hear horse butt or kangaroo leather are the top picks. I just found some hard cowhide. Works ok but I have nothing to compare it to.

You don't sharpen with the leather just clean up the edge by stropping... you can put green or black compound on the leather and it'll sharpen

Thin leather works best for a strop.

Horse butt and kangaroo is very thin and preferred by those seeking ultra polished edges.

I just use thin veg-tanned cowhide leather and get good results. Hobby Lobby has it in 8x10 sheets.

You can use compounds or pastes or sprays or just bare leather depending on the level of finish desired.

The advice of singularity35 is pretty good. That's how I started stropping. I was amazed at seeing a little metal appearing!
Since then I made a few balsa wood strops and invested in green compound. Good investment for little cost.

Curious... where'd you get this info from?
