Sharpen with the edge pro, touch up with the sharpmaker?

So I've been thinking that it might be unnecessary to sharpen my knives with the edge pro every time they need a little touch up. I was wondering if it makes sense to just use the sharpmaker to touch the edges up and keep them sharp, then use the edge pro again when it finally get really dull. Does that make sense at all? And also do any of you guys do this?

I don't use an Edge Pro or a Sharpmaker, but yeah, I do something similiar... :D Seriously.

That is exactly what I do. I don't believe a knife needs to have so much metal removed every week to keep it in good shape. I only use the EdgePro on most of my knives 3-4 times a year. (The seriously hard users get it much more often.) The rest of the time I touch up on a Sharpmaker and either borosilicate glass rods or leather strops.
All my knives will still easily slice (not push cut) toilet paper using this method which is all I require of most of my knives.

What you are suggesting/asking....is EXACTLY where I think the sharpmaker shines.

Been wanting to buy the UF rods, but for the last couple years I've just been too impressed with what a few light swipes will on the sharpmaker will do.

Now, bringing back a truly dull edge...you couldn't PAY me to use the sharpmaker for that!:D (been there, done that)

Caption Obvious says: "Just be sure you you use the 19 degree dot (or lower) on your edge pro."

I do believe that the EP and the SM complement each other. Once you get that bevel angle to match any of the SM's preset bevel angles, touching up a knife back to hair whittling is just a few strokes away on the SM. Even when you've dulled a knife, you can just go to the brown rods and still have a hair whittling edge in about less time than it takes to prepare dinner. :D

Oh, and one more thing you should be looking at. To really save your knife, use a strop and touch up often. You won't need to take it back to the stones as often as you'd need to without a strop.

I'll be another echo in here and mention that your idea has been in use for a while now by a good chunk of Edge Pro owners out there.

Nonetheless, it is an excellent idea- especially for someone who uses their knife frequently but doesn't have time to sit down, unpack the EP, and hone their user every day.

For instance:

1. Come home from work
2. Warm up food / cook dinner
3. Hone EDC on extra fine rods while food warms up
4. Open beverage
5. Eat, Drink, Relax

The Sharpmaker works great as long as you dont have a lot of metal to remove.

Thats where the Edge Pro comes in. Use it to prep the edge and the Sharpmaker to keep it sharp.
