Sharpened my BK2 because I dulled my BK2 (a bit) on a project to sharpen my BK2

So anyways, a thread from a few days back convinced me to make and use a strop for my knives. I'm a strop noob so if you spot some evidence that I've gone horribly wrong, don't be shy to speak up. Anyway, since we like pics...

Here are the tools. Found a scrap bit of leather from the local Tandy for about $2.50...

But yeah - that pencil has been hacked mercilessly (my son's work without a doubt). Clearly it is fine for marking leather, but apparently I'm OCD enough to need to smooth that out a bit. Better...

Leather marked and ready for cutting...

And cut. The BK2 handled the job better than the utility knife thing I used last time I fooled with leather. Think I'll leave that gooby bit on the end for a handle...

Loaded and ready for action...

And there's the edge. I'm sure it could be sharper but I'm pretty happy with it for now...

i wont say your doing it wrong or anything
but all the strops i see usually have the leather glued to a piece of wood. Keeps the strops straight (less likely for the leather to curl over the edge and dull it, if i am understanding it correctly)

but i am sure someone with more experience will be along to confirm that or explain why i am wrong :p

Afaik, you're right. I've stropped my knives on leather belts for the last 6 years. If you put the belt under your foot and pull tight with your hand, it will just have enough slop to make a nice slightly convex edge. Go for it, even if you screw up bad, that hunk of steel will sharpen right back up with a bit of practice!

I'm not opposed to gluing this to something but this strop is of pretty thick leather and lies flat as a board on my desk. Check my shiny BK2 edge. :D

Make a backer board and glue that leather to it. Score yourself up another scrap and make it two sided. One side rough and one side smooth. Put your compound on the rough side. When stropping don't press too hard, I'd say light even pressure and keep the angles right just like when you use your dmt hones.

Yeah, I need to learn how to strop a blade. Time to search for how to vids.

Looks easy enough, till I screw up. :) So before I cut myself, does human blood work well as a compound? Ha ha

Nice work, OF.

Since this thread is resurrected I like to see how the OP is doing now,
Still stropping? Gave it up? Found something he likes better.
