Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum and essentially new to knife sharpening as well. As a christmas gift to myself I decided to follow an American tradition and purchase a new Buck 110. I believe that maintaining any gear is crucial to its effectiveness and longevity. My question is what sharpening system would be a good place to start with this knife? I'm obviously looking for a sharp as edge as possible but easiness is also an important factor since I've never done it before. Also, if anyone could suggest any good threads on here that I should read before I actually attempt to sharpen, that would be very much appreciated. Thank you everyone for your time!

Welcome aboard! If you look in the Maintenance, Tinkering, And Rmbellishment section, you'll find more information on sharpening than you could ever need. That said, a good inexpensive sharpener to maintain that Buck would be the Lansky TurnBox. It comes with medium and fine ceramic rods that fit in little holes to form a "V" shape. It has a spot for 40 degrees total and 50 degrees total. If you don't completely destroy the edge on your knife, the 40 degree (20 per side) setting with the fine rods will keep it shaving sharp. Just remember use light pressure. For a little more money, the Spyderco Sharpmaker is also an excellent system

I highly recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker. It's a fantastic sharpening system and especially great as an introduction to sharpening for beginners. If you have the money grab a pair of diamond and ultra fine ceramic rods as well and you'll be very well covered for a very long time.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys! Are there any sets out there for under $100 that will give me a shaving edge?

Norton Combination SiC stone ~$20

DMT Magna-Guide Deluxe Kit $62
(I use a DMT Aligner Deluxe that is similar in price but inferior imho)

Wet/Dry SiC paper and a block of wood <$20

The Sharpmaker kit is about $60-70. The extra rods are more but you don't need them right away. With the rods provided you'll be able to get and keep your knives beyond shaving sharp. I thought my knives were sharp before I got the Sharpmaker. Then I got it and my definition of sharp completely changed. It's the best purchase I've ever made in this hobby. Also look into getting/making/using a strop to put the final edge on after the Sharpmaker to REALLY get a crazy edge. There are plenty of threads here and youtube vids about that.

If you look on Ebay there is someone selling a NEW Sharpmaker for only $54 with FREE ship. Not sure where you located but if in the US that is a very good price!

No I am not affiliated with the seller in any way!!! :)

Moved to MTE for discussion on sharpening equipment/technique, General Knife Discussion is for discussing knives.

You can get the Lansky Turnbox for around $18. The Sharpmaker is definitely nicer which I why I got one, but the Lansky will give you a shaving sharp edge as well. I gave mine to my brother

There's nothing special about sharpening a Buck 110. You can get a 'device' like the Sharp Maker and it will get you a sharp edge. Learning free-hand sharpening will teach you much more. Just a simple combination stone like the Norton India a coarse/ fine. Runs 20$ delivered. Just this can net you 50 years of sharp edges. DM

This.... If you have the time and want to learn sharpening freehand! (a very useful skill!). Otherwise I recommend another manual sharpening system like the sharpmaker or edge pro apex as a huge upgrade.
