Okay, i have a lansky system 5 pc. deluxe, with a strop and a saphire. It works great I have built my own strops that go right on the bottom of the hones just zip tie em on on you are ready to go. All of which are preloaded with "buffing compounds" 1-6 all on their own little leather strops. But that razor finish is hard to find. razor edge plus a mirror. finish nearly impossible. say a straight razor whats the angle on that? like 13-16 degrees? the problem with that id the lansky system only goes 17-30.

i was looking into a kme what angles does that system do? can i get more adjustable angles out of the kme system? price wise used, new, what would i be looking at? can you get a plethora of hones/stones for the kme system? like you can with the lansky?

pros and cons with both of these systems? whats the better bang for my buck? should i stay with the lansky and try to get these razor/mirror edges? or should i go with the kme later on because i would really like to get straight razor edges, for the sake of shaving my face. and then selling them straight razors and knives, i like the hobby its cool. any input on this would be helpful.

Just picked up a KME, haven't used it yet. Like the Lansky it ranges from 17 to 30 degrees. There is a difference between the two. The Lansky has only 4 slots and can float within the slot if you don't hold the rod in place. The KME has degree marks 17,18 etc. The rod fits in a hard plastic ball with a hole through it. You have better control of the rod with the plastic ball. It's easier to rotate the knife from side to side. It's twice the cost of a Lansky, maybe a little more. There is a good selection of stones for the KME, Amazon has some Chosera stones for the KME and they are proud of them.
I got the diamond set with mine which was more than the standard stones.
I can get an ok mirror edge with the Lansky, nothing to brag about but from some of the mirror edges I've seen, I don't care to have a blade edge that clean. And some of the stones that is used for that high shine is beyond my experience.

I suggest you continue to use your Lansky system and develop your skills to a higher level.
I too have added a strip of leather to one of the hones. I also bought one of their leather hones. Both did not work as a proper strop should. They just don't have the stroke length...dirty minded buggers...to get a proper finish to the edge.

I've only used the Lansky system...diamond and ceramic hones...and I really like it. After using the yellow and sapphire hones I always finish by stropping on a home made strop with black and green compounds. This gives me a mirror finish and an edge that shaves hair easily.
But it took me some time to develop experience to get the most out of the Lansky as well as all the other systems.
In my opinion it is one of the best bangs for the buck out there.

Good luck and keep us informed.

I've used the lansky and got some great edges but found that it wasn't very accurate (uneven bevels etc). Now I've upgraded to am edgepro and hope to see better results. I'm still in training.

I too was looking at the KME one cause it clamps the knife so you dont have to hold it or try to sharpen with your non dominant hand which might take a bit to teach yourself.
I have the dmt aligner kit that has diamond hones but that too you have to hold on to. They should have made a base for it! I was thinking about switching to the l
Lansky one just for the base but then started looking at others.
