Sharpener recommendations?

Just bought an SOG Vision with a Ti handle. Can anyone recommend a good sharpener? I'm looking at the Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker since it can be used for serrated edges. Any experience with this one or other suggestions?

I don't want to be a "USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION, NOOOB!!!" guy, but that question is asked about once a week on this forum... maybe we need a "what's a good first sharpener" FAQ?

Yes, the Sharpmaker is a great sharpener, and very easy to use. You'll also hear people advocating the "Edgepro", but it's quite a bit more expensive and LOOKS to be a little more complicated to set up. (I've never used one, so I could very well be wrong about this.)

Anyway, if you do a search on "sharpener" you'll find several threads from the last few weeks on this very subject, with pros and cons listed for the various devices.

Welcome to the forums! :D

The Spyderco Sharpmaker is great. Quick to set up and easy to do.

Warning though: If you are going to be using this system exclusively, do not let your knife get dull. It will take FOREVER to put an edge back on it with this system. (Unless you buy the diamond rods for $50. I have them and they do a good job of reprofiling.)

If you just make sure to touch up the edge every week on the Sharpmaker you should be able to maintain a sharp knife forever. :)

Another good system is the Edge Pro system. I don't own one but it recieves great reviews.

Hi Desertguy.
I'd say go with the Sharpmaker. It's easy to use and gives great results. Only downside is it can be slow if you need to remove a lot of metal but for regular edge maintenance it's hard to beat.

If you like to freehand sharpen, then I would recommend the Spyderco Doublestuff. One side is med. and the other is fine. It is the same High Alumina Ceramic that is used on the sharpmaker and it comes in a nice leather pouch. You can find them here at www.knivesplus.com . I prefer a blade that will shave body hair and I have used this model on many different steels. :)

Beware
Buying a Sharpmaker puts you on a slippery slope.

When you can get a knife razor sharp and keep it that way you will be inclined to buy more....and more......and more ;)

Go for the sharpmaker !!!

(but have in mind that there's nothing like knowing how to sharp your knives freehand :D )
