Hi,
Can anyone recommend a good knife sharpening tool for someone who has a hard time getting it right? Ideally, it would be something I might find locally. What features should I look for?

Go buy the Spyderco Sharpmaker. It'd be a steal at thrice the price.

You can find lots of threads reviewing it.

I have had mine for 6 years and it is, by far, the easiest sharpener I own. I have the old model, only one setting for bevels, but it is the perfect angle for all of my knives (20 degrees). The best part are the ceramic hones that can be held in the hand all by their lonesome. I use these on a regular basis to remove sharp points, burrs, etc. on knives that may lay next to my tender hide, inside the waist band for example.
