Sorry if this has been posted 10 times in the past,I just never got to read anything on this subject.
Which sharpening system would you recomend to maintain a factory edge?Im good with a stone....but it takes to long.If I wanted to change the angle on a edge, im sure not gona try this freehand with a stone.Im looking at the lansky and gatco"diamond"systems.Which is better, and who has the best price?Best price has my sale.
Thanks,
Jay

204 Sharpmaker. Most factory edges are set to about 35 degrees, most sharpners are set to 40 degrees (a more ulititarin edge). The 204 can be set to 35 allowing you to keep the factory edge. Aslo, unlike stones you don't have to worry about maintaining the correct angle, the 204 does it for you. One word or warning, a sharper edge is also a thinner edge. Depending on the steel and the tasks the knife will see a 35 degree angle may not be the best angle. Choose appropriately. Hope this helps.

Jay,

You can search the Blade Discussion Forum (year 1 and current) for keywords "Lansky" and "Gatco." I have a Lansky set myself and always got great results. I usually use it for initial sharpening (i.e. changing the bevel) of a new knife. I use Sharpmaker after that to maintain my knives.

i have a gatco system. i like the wider hones, but the clamp is a piece of crap. plan on getting a lansky clamp. for folders i picked up a DMT clamp that works great, but it only accepts blades that are 1/8" thick or less. i love it. makes it easy to change angles for certain applications. my brother has the lansky and loves it. i have heard, though i can't say its true that the gatco hones are better quality.

For speed of sharpening, the clamp systems cannot compare to a benchstone and the Sharpmaker is way slower than the clamp systems. The fastest (non power tool) method would be Razor's Edge clamps on a large Benchstone.
