In your respected opinion...

Spyderco sharpmaker V Lansky

which is the better of the two for sharpening?

I have the lansky crock sticks but I am finding the holes are not perfect anymore and that the angles are getting wider. So I am in the market for a new sharpening system. Dont wanna spend the earth but something that I can put a decent hair popping edge on my toys. Will probably end up buying from the bay as UK shops for these things are crap.

Anyone use the Spyderco sharpmaker? or the Lansky (Not crock sticks)

Thoughts would be appreciated.

John

PS I found that the Lansky struggled with putting a edge on a 882 ATS34

hi mav
i am in the market for a sharpener as well and mentioned that here in another thread
i said i was looking at the edge pro but they have a tag $200-$500 and a few of the guys on here recommended the edgepro apex about $150-$200
i still havent decided yet
i was going to get the lansky pro as they have those here in canada but have decided to go with an edge pro of some sort and thought i would send them my edc for their test sharpening they offer
check out the link to the edge pro site http://www.edgeproinc.com/

defintely the sharpmaker for your spydies , dunno about it for buck knives though as i`ve never used my bucks to have to resharpen them though

From everything I have read the spyderco sharpmaker is very good,
But I love my Lansky and will continue to use it.

Buckman#10 - Could you explain the difference between the Lansky Pro and the Lansky Deluxe??? I didn't see the Pro listed when I ordered my Deluxe (I thought they were the same at first)... :p

OK; I got this from your link -

The Professional Kit includes:
Medium Serrated Edge Hone - Coarse Hone - Medium Hone - Fine Hone - Ultra-Fine Hone

The Deluxe Kit includes:
Extra Coarse Hone - Coarse Hone - Medium Hone - Fine Hone - Ultra-Fine Hone

I'm confused, though...You said $500 for the Pro Kit??? I'm looking at their prices...even the Diamond kit isn't that much...

Which one costs $500???

oh sorry about that
originally i was going to get a lansky because i can get them in canada so no duty but when i checked them out they werent quite what i wanted
so it is the edge pro that is $500 i never looked in to their deluxe model but they have them as well and both companies have the diamond option as well and then there is the spyderco one too but i never really considered it

i still havent decided which of the edge pro models to get , on the passaround forum they are supposed to be having a passaround lotto for the edge pro apex that i am in on but i havent heard anything for a couple of weeks i think the apex is about $200
if i wasnt in canada i would suggest us buck knuts have our own passaround lotto for one then everyone could try it

I think the Sharpmaker is by far the least hassle. However, it is not the most versatile. With the Sharpmaker, you are gonna need a coarse bench stone as a backup for re-profiling.

Hi mav,

I'm not a big fan for any crock stick type of sharpener.....but that's just me. You have to be able to hold your blade at the same angle every time you swipe it on that type of system or you change your blade profile...a lot :(.

The Lansky system is much easer for me to use. I get the same results every time I lock a blade into it. Also the Lansky system is cheaper ;).

What he said

Only thing is that I use the GATCO rather than the
Lansky. But they are more or less the same.

mmm Hi john

I admit I am leaning towards the Lansky...

what knives or what steels have you sharpened on yours John?

Sharpmaker gives better results, faster and much easy to use. I tryed first Lansky but it is just too messy. I think sharpmaker is best sharpening system for begnner. In time I start sharpening on diamond stones and diamond powders on leather, this gives best results, but Sharpmaker gives anybody excellent results pretty fast.

Only problem is putting initial edge or reprofiling. If angle is same as yo have on sharpmaker and edge is OK then it is perfect to restore shaving sharp condition. If you have different degree edge, then you need corse stone and even Spyderco diamond rods will not really help - I have a lot of trouble sharpening 50 degree KaBar with sharpmaker, until reprofile it with coarse EzeLap - Diamond products is what I use in this case. They are very available in any carpenter store.

Thanks, Vassili.

Bucks: 420, 440, S30V worked just fine with all three.

SOG's, Gerber, Rigid (old rigid), Case, Browning.

If you go with the Lansky system I would recomend that you get one of the clamp systems to go with it.

I have both the Sharpmaker and the Landsky system. I like both but find myself using the Sharpmaker most of the time. The Landsky is very useful for establishing the proper angle on knives that have been sharpened on a stone free hand. I think if I had to choose one it would be the Sharpmaker. Mine is a older model, could be 10 years old?

I got a Lansky Cheeseburger Deluxe for Jesus' Birthday.
But I am gonna wait until the house is empty before I open it up and look like an idiot trying to figure it out...
