Greetings, Let's talk about which sharpeners work best and which ones don't. I am about ready to purchase one. I have always used a stone, and it works, but it always scratches the blades. What's new and want works. Thanks

You need some more practice with stones, with experience you'll almost never scratch a blade. Other than that, go for an edgepro apex (or pro if you have the $$$), no personal experience, but it's probably the most popular "guide" type sharpener on bladeforums, and the edge pictures I've seen speak for themselves.

yeah, you probably need "freehand-stone-Zen-in-the-zone-Flow" :D

either that, or you're sharpening your knives....

a) ...on worn down stones (bulges in the middle)
b) ...at 2 degrees per side (:) )
c) ....sloppy (:) )

i vouch for the Spyderco Sharpmaker. have heard nothing but good from it, and it comes with an instructional DVD, hosted by Sal Glesser himself

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

Thinner edges will cut better, but they do require good steel properly heat treated. If a good blade is profiled to an angle too acute for the steel, it may roll, and need frequent steeling or stropping to bring it back. But if the steel and heat treat are not good, it will need frequent resharpening.

It's a good idea to get the edge as thin as possible, until you see it's not holding up, then make it slightly more obtuse and you're good to go.
