what's the best all around sharpeners for a knife. anything goes controlled angle, steels, strops anything

Just recently I have seen a lot of almost hysterical praise for the Wicked Edge Pro... they are about 3 months backordered so they must be doing something right.

Nothing will ever beat free-handing on good stones. I, personally, am a diamond stone/plate person...DMT DuoSharp...I have the whole set. Other free-handers swear by Japanese water stones. Regardless, you will always be shackeled to the bench with a "gadget". Freehand with stones and a strop and you will be able to sharpen everything.

I like to use a DMT aligner with a coarse or extra coarse diamond stone to reprofile the edges of knives as low as it'll go (at least on narrower blades), and then I go straight to the medium and fine rods on the Sharpmaker and I put a 40 degree secondary bevel on the knife. This gives me a thin cutting bevel with a more robust cutting edge, which I like.

I have an Edge Pro Apex and love it. But as you can see from the variety of answers so far, there isn't any universally agreed upon "best" sharpening method: the most important thing is just to pick something that fits your budget and skills, and then hone those skills as much as possible through practice.

Hello CAMO-OMEGA ,
Wicked edge gets my vote , i also own a Edge Pro Apex . Learning curve on Wicked Edge much easier , and quicker.

I love my Lansky system combined with the Sharpmaker. I profile the edge to 30 degrees wwith the Lansky and then set the back bevel and cutting edge on the Sharpmaker using the 30 and 40 degree angles. That way I can just take the shaprmaker with me in the field and be able to touch up the blade easily.
