So with my current financial situation I'm stuck between the Smiths 3 in 1, and the Lansky Crock sharpener(ceramic sticks, comes with medium and fine grit). Any advice?

have looked into the lansky standard 3 stone kit (LKC03) ?

do you want a sharpening system or would you prefer free hand sharpening?

Spyderco Sharpmaker has been working fine for my s30v blades for over an year now. It is guided, so if you are a newbie should work well. Standard config - white and brown rods.

i have a lansky crock stick system and it works great, i dont own any s30v but it works on 420 hc and vg10 fine

i posted this in your other thread:

if you want diamond and you don't have/really want experience free-hand sharpening, your best bet would probably be smiths diamond kit (model# DPSKP). they run around $30.

p.s. i don't have any experience with sharpening kits, i do all of my sharpening free-hand.

Do a search in this forum, Maintenance, Tinkering, and Mebellishment. There is very little that hasn't been covered. You can surely find reviews on the systems you've inquired about. This is the sharpening subforum, that is why your threads keep getting moved here.

As far as sharpening S30V, it is the same technique you would use to sharpen 440, VG10, 154CM, or CPM-D2. Patience, you will never be able to get a laser sharp edge in a minute. This is something that takes time to learn. Technique, you need to read up on the techniques members use here, then you will see what you are doing wrong and what you are doing right. Freehand or guided, one thing does not work best for everyone. Some folks like freehand sharpening, others prefer guided systems and mechanical means. All good, just different. In time you will find what works best for you. There are some very economical means to sharpen a knife effectively, then there are several hundred dollar systems. Pick something and read up on it.
