Sharpenin' question...

I can sort of sharpen now. I can get a burr and then realign it. This gives me a good utility edge that holds well and is probably good for most of my uses. However one cannot shave with it. I think I remember the sharpening FAQ saying to refine the burr. How is this done?

I'm using a fine and a not as fine ceramic rod for sharpening. I figured it was sort of the same movements as using a chakma. Is this good way to go about it? Is there an easier way? Is there life on other planets?

I'll try the strop. Does one clean off the leather after stroping? Does the leather need treatments of neat's foot oil etc?

I'm pleased that I'm finally getting some success :)

Bruise a strop needs cleaning only rarely, or recharged for that matter.
Use either jewelers rouge or chromium oxide to finish stropping.
I've used neats foot oil on some strops in order to get the compound to apply a little more easily.
It doesn't take much.

Hopefully your strop will be 10" long or longer. The leather on mine is right at 14" with the strop being about 20" over all length.
The leather is almost too short for some of the longer khukuris for the way I like to strop.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully soon I'll have hairless patches all over myself. :D

Bruise that's called "Knife Fighter's Mange.":p
No!!!! Really!!!!

On one hand "knife fighter's mange" just denotes the appearance of a genuine knife knut.
When asked about his barren patches on his/her arms they will gush forth with all kinds of knowledge about steels, woods, leather, kydex and spandex, Oops, forgot myself there, another thread perhaps.:o ;)
Anyway they will talk about knives as long long and loud as you will permit them too, usually extolling the benefits of one knife over other knives in their possesion.:)
Khukuri Knuts are the craziest of the whole lot. "You shaved your arm with a knife that size?!?!?!?!?!?!?" Dayum, But you *Are* Crazy!!!!!!!:)

And on the other hand the big problem with "knife fighter's mange" on a person is that one never knows whether the person is an experienced knife fighter or a knife fighter wannabe.
In my mind both are equally dangerous. One can or will hurt or kill you at will if provoked or paid. The other will or can hurt or kill you out of pure panic.
And either way you are equally hurt or dead.
Never back anyone into a corner.

...and never wear short-sleeved shirts into a restaurant,if you get that sort of edge. Makes other patrons shaky, and may get you hauled off by the health department.

I have sharpened and shaved patches of hair off of arms and legs for years and years with a bare blade, some actually
'razor sharp.'
Seldom, very, very seldom have I nicked myself with a knife, but give me a "safety razor" and I take spells at nicking my chin, under my nose and worse of all on the edge of my top lip, usually done in series of three.
And I do this often enough that I *Always* keep a styptic pencil in the medicine cabinet.:(
Maybe I oughta opt out for a straight razor, but I just can't seem to get in the contorinist positions needed to shave certain areas of my face.;)
And I'm not so sure I could maintain the edge needed on a razor. That's a whole different aspect of sharpening in my understanding.

My bad. Let's not talk about the spandex.:p  :o

I guess after 40 or 50 years of practice I finally learned how to shave. I don't cut myself very much anymore.
