Sharpening...4 Dummies

I have got to be the worst knife sharpener on the planet.
Does anyone have advice on how to properly sharpen a knife?

I dont have a big budget but I'm willing to go out and buy the proper tools but where do I start?

First knife I want to sharpen is my EDC... Camillus Heat, (3.65", clip point, AUS 8 steel) and I dont want to end up with a tooth pick when I'm done!

Any help would be appreciated...thanks all.

I'm not a great sharpener either but there are TONS of threads about this topic already. Check over in the Maint. and Tinkering forum as there are usually one or two current threads going. Also try putting 'sharpening site:bladeforums.com' into a google search.
 
Get a DMT aligner kit like knife nut mentioned. That will hold the blade at the right angle. Start off with coarse and keep swiping along one side of the blade until you raise a burr over the entire edge of one side of the blade. Flip sides and repeat. Once you've raised a burr on both sides one at a time on coarse go to the fine stone do one stroke on one side and flip over and over until you can't feel the burr and you can atleast shave arm hair( this may take some time so be patient)Then repeat the swipe and flip on to the extra fine stone for a while and you should have a pretty sharp knife by the time you're done. Keep in mind this will take some time to be patient. Also you can strop with the dmt kit by cutting a piece of leather to fit the slot where you place the stones if you want that extra edge refinement.
 
Here's my suggestion: buy the cheapest knife you can find and one rough stone and one fine stone, and see what it takes to put a good edge on it. I learned to free hand sharpen in Cub Scouts, so I'm sure anyone can do it.
