I'm having trouble getting this thing hair popping sharp like the rest of my knives. I'm sharpening it on 40 degrees. I recently found out that it has a 30 degree edge. Should I switch it to the 30 degree edge in my sharp maker then?

Thanks,
George

George, you should sharpen it on 30 then, go to 40 and do extremely light passes to make something like a microbevel.

Should I skip right to the fine and ultra fine stones when I make the micro bevel on 40?

if you have been sharpening it at 40 degrees than you already have a "micro bevel" depending on how much you have sharpened it at 40 degrees and the grit of the stones you have used the size of the bevel may have exceeded what i would personally consider a "micro" bevel. if this is the case then sharpening at 30 degrees is only going to smooth out what is left of the original bevel and not effect your edge at all. if you want you edge to be at 30 degrees (depending on how much metal you have removed at 40 degrees) you will have to reprofile the edge which will completely remove the 40 degree edge.

I agree with all previous posters. To answer this question, I go straight to the white rod for the microbevel. 2-4 strokes is usually enough.
