Hey all,
Brand new to the site and just got my first survival knife (a BK2) I love it, but I tried sharpening it on the above captioned sharpener and seem to have made it more dull.
Please don't boot me from the site before giving me a few pointers on how to do a better job with it.
Thanks

You can use a sharpie pen to mark the cutting edge and then see how you're doing.

You can also strop the blade and that may help.

Take the time to read the sticky message at the top of this sub forum titled "how to sharpen a knife." It's a great first step in knife sharpening.

The Bk2 is a massive knife and is likely going to need lots of metal removal to have the edge match the SM. Save yourself the headache of using the SM on such a large blade and buy a coarse benchstone. Once you profile the bevel to your liking you can then tune it up with the SM. The sharp maker is best used as a sharp keeper, the stones are too small for any real grinding needs.

You may be better off convexing that short stubby knife on a belt sander if you have the skills. I got rid of mine before I thought to do that. It ended up being too short to be useful as a big knife for me, and too long and thick for fine work, while being stupid at a 1/4" thick.

Welcome to the forums. Lots of awesome info here for you as well. Especially from the likes of Jason B., Obsessed with Edges, and Heavy Handed. These guys have the sharpening thing down to a crazy art form.

yeah what the other guys said. Try reading the manual and if that doesn't work i'd try a coarse bench stone

I imagine it will take a while with the Sharpmaker to get it 'right'. Like others have said its merely a tool to maintain an edge. I wouldn't try and take a knife and 'reprofile/regrind' it with it.

Thank you Jason and thanks everyone for their input and advice.
I think you're right, as in order to hit the blade edge that I marked w/ a sharpie, I had to severely angle the knife to the stones. This goes against the directions that came w/ the kit. Finding that "sweet spot" every time will be tough. I'll try re profiling the edge a little and see if I can get it to match. Hopefully without screwing up the knife.
Thanks again.
