A friend gave me a Boker folding knife to sharpen for him. It has a ceramic blade. Can this be done on a belt grinder? What sort of belt, speed, etc.? And will it form a burr? Etc.?

Thanks,

John

They don't form a wiredge. They chip very easily.

I spent a lot of time trying various approaches. The most successful was an EdgePro with diamond strips followed by polishing compound on a leather hone.

At the end of the day, I was pretty disappointed in my Boker Infinity.

Don't use a beltsander, it might just shatter if it were to grab and smack the work rest or something.

The only thing I've heard people have any success with is a fine diamond hone and lots of patience. He could probably send it to boker to be sharpened, and then its not on you.

Hey, John,

You still in Mass. or move back to CA yet?

As for the ceramic blade, Nancy has a set in the kitchen, and a couple have devloped microchipping. A 3M Micron belt won't cut it. A ceramic stick will chip it to ruin. A diamond hone will sorta work. As pointed out, go slowly, and use a relatively fine hone from the start.

The best method, as stated previously, is send it out to be sharpened by an outfit set up for this with wet-wheel diamond hones.

Diamond will work but then you have to polish the edge because scratches on the edge will act as stress risers which may cause breakage . This is why sharpening ceramic is usually not a do it yourself project.

Cool, John! Good luck with the move and with your new venture!
