I'm looking for information on how to properly sharpen a convex edge. I know some of you recommend sandpaper (SiC), but how is the sandpaper held and the knife moved over it? What are the expert's techniques. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hello, and welcome to the forums.

1) You shoudl do a search. Click on the search button on the top right of the screen. Search the shop talk and general forums, as well as their respective archives for info on the subject.

2) To do the sandpaper method, you need a board with leather, rubber, styrofoam, or whatever on it, and pace sand paper on that medium. You then use a stropping motion with your blade while pressing kinda hard on the sand paper. The soft backing deforms to a curve and you convex the edge that way. Step up on the sandpaper through the grits, strop, and you're done!

3) Get a belt sander. Any sander is fine, though check into how easily you can get belts up to 600 grit. You only need say a 220 grit or 320 grit belt, 400 belt and then a 600 grit belt. Slack belt sanding is scary to do at first, but WELL worth the effort. After snading, strop. You get amazing edges and you get them quickly.

Thanks, guys. I think I am getting the flick. I do need to get a belt grinder and I can order the various grit (SiC) sandpaper through the local hardware store. One more question. When you strop are you rolling the blade over the spine like stropping a razor?

To strop:

lay the knife on the strop just as you would if it were a sharpening stone. Instead of cutting into the strop with a forward motion (as you would when sharpening), reverse your motions, "dragging" the edge backwards on the strop. Always strop one side, then flip the knife over using the spine as the pivot axis!!! In other words, once you strop one side (holding your angle and such carefully, as in sharpening) you should lift the knife off of the strop and start on the other side carefully. If you flip your knife edge doen on the strop, you mess up the edge.

Ahhh. I get it. Again thanks, Crayola. Now I can sharpen my Fallkniven S1 properly.
