I had received a Marto sword froma friend as a gift. I was very touched, and as a sign of appreciation I want to have the sword sharpened (came dull unfortunately

).

I know it is not much of a sword but it was the thought that counts. Obviously I do not need a wisened grandmaster to sharpen a sword of this calibre.. does anyone have experience with this?

I watch Jap samurai movies occationally and they use a small sharpening stone and move that along the blade a opposed to the blade over the stone.

and no

lock the sword in a vise and work the edges with a file

Sniper, Send it to me. You pay the postage, I'll sharpen it for free. Special case here, so don't everyone send me blades to sharpen. Besides Sniperboy has a knife on order.

Hi Guys,

It is a shinraysaya.. It was given to me last year during xmas and I have though tof sharpening it but didn't know how. I like the design cause my idol in the movies always uses one of those. I wish I could get one with better calibre, but well...

and Jerry I appreciate the thought =) I will find a way to send it to you asap! THanks!!!

So what are you getting from Jerry, Sniperboy?

I am getting a 12 inch bladed millenium bowie and am in the process of designing a double edged weehawk type 5-6 inch blade fixed fighter. If Jerry still has time I want to get one of his Neck knives if he chooses to pursue making them.

And you Ryan? WHat is on your list??

Unless a sword uses a laminated blade it is usually soft enough to sharpen with a file. A 12" single cut mill bastard works well. Get Nicholson brand. You can do a very clean and conspicuous bevel using a file. A file edge also cuts well on a relatively obtuse edge like you find on swords. You may not need to use a vise. I like to hold the sword tip downwards stuck lightly in a block of wood while I work. If you start profiling near the tip while the rest of the blade is dull you can hold the sword by the blade while you work. Be sure to have a handle on your file. You might want to wear cut resistant metal fabric gloves like they sell for filleting fish. I've cut myself a lot of times sharpening swords and machetes.

Awesome! I've been looking at Jerry's bowies for a while; he really got my attention when he introduced the 3V version!

I'm buying a lot of knifemaking equipment right now, so between that and taxes

I don't have much to allocate to knives, but I have an Obsession damascus knife coming this summer from Darrel Ralph, a couple of bowies from Chuck Hallberg and Bob Miller on the way soon that I ordered a while ago, and a Stamascus folder coming up in a month or so. That will probably have to be it for a while; I need to save money for a grinder!

And Ryan Hossom's knives are eye catching TO SAY THE LEAST. Jerry is also a great guy to work with. If I were to say somethign about his characetr, it would be that the knife you would get would be one of a kind (not like the semi customs you see out there that differs only in filework or materials) if you invest enough time with him he will make sure your knife is yours alone.

but I see how it can be a problem with all those knives oin order ^_^. If you do get one from him please do share.
