Okay, I have asked this question on other forums before and received a diverse set of answers. I thought I would ask it here and see what kind of responses I get.

Basically I need to put a good edge on my 15th century mercenary sword. I have been told that anything from a 35 to 45 degree bevel will be fine. Any recommendations? Also any thoughts on how to keep the bevel uniform down the length of the sword? Should the bevel be put on with a file or by some other method? Thanks.

Here is a link you might find interesting, indicating that a secondary bevel of any sort is not desireable, and a file should be used only in the case of a very blunt edge.
