Wanted to find out from those who own a Fehrman, do you have to use diamond stones with Fehrman blades, for will regular water stones work just fine? Have a few on the way, and wanted some advice. Thanks!

atama my ferhman is a 1st for me so i have'nt needed anymore than the stroup. somewhere down the line i'll contact bear or kdstrick to find out about maintaining bevel or releaveing the grind.knifenut1013 is the expert on edges but i do'nt know if he has messed with ferhmans.

Thanks for the reply. Just made my first strop for maintaining the edge, but was thinking about possibly thinning the edge on a thru hiker. I understand that their HT on 3V makes for a very tough blade, and just am not sure if regular stones are up to the task. (Also make for a good excuse to get some more toys :D)

Water stones will work, but will take some time. Diamond is great if it needs sharpening. I usually use my edge pro. However, I keep it touched up with a strop and the edge will last a long, long time. Fehrman blades are not as hard to sharpen as you might think. At the Fehrman shop they use a 420 grit diamond file from harbor freight and then strop the blade. Fehrmans will take a wicked edge and hold it.

3V is not hard to sharpen.
The good thing is, you don't have to do it much.
3V holds an edge better than most 'super steels'.

I've only had to do touch ups a couple of times However, when I did touch it up, I used a Sharpmaker with waterstones.

I ordered a Final Judgement and Thru-Hiker a few weeks ago, along with Fehrmans diamond paste and strop. This is what they use at the factory before they ship any knife. They are screaming sharp out of the box, and seem to have a slight convex edge on the tanto portion of the blade.
I intend to follow suit using this method myself.

What models are you getting?

Just got a Thru Hiker off the exchange, and am debating between the Final and Extreme Judgement.

Got my Thru hiker today!:D But after a little use, I really want to thin the edges (just my preference). What grit stone would be recommended for this? 320 or 600 grit DMT dia sharp? Thanks!
