Not sure how to go about sharpening this in my Hapstone R2. Should I approach it as 2 separate blades, in other words, clamp it to sharpen straight part of edge then reposition and clamp in order to sharpen curved portion?

Your best bet with curves on the inside are rods ... either circular rods or the edge of a triangular shaped rod. The more curved it is, the more you need to use rods.

I was able to get useable sharpness using a Lansky. I have Venev Ursa stones (.6”) for the R2 and was hoping that I could use those.

I would try to find a wooden mop handle or something the right size and use sandpaper.

So, is it the case that a curved edge like this can’t be sharpened with a flat stone, even a narrow stone such as the Ursa?

I guess it depends on the curve and stone size. But I haven't tried it yet myself.

Back to the original question. If one were to sharpen such a knife in a clamped system how would you clamp it? Clamp so straight section is parallel to clamps, then reposition and clamp so curved section is aligned, or clamp once and sharpen entire edge?

It seems to me that repositioning it would give the better results. If you are able to figure a way to clamp with the curved section aligned. If not yo will have to clamp once and sharpen the entire edge.

The Venev Gemini Series curved diamond stones, that Gritomatic sells, will work well on that curved section. And they could be used on the flat if needed.

Myself. I would take the R2 head off of my Hapstone base, and replace it with my V8 head. I think the V8 head would be a lot easier to set up for repositioning that knife. But I'm biased I prefer my V8 head to my R2 head.

O.B.

Well I decided to have a go with the Hawkbill on the R2. I treated it as 2 separate sharpening jobs, changing position in the clamps for the curved portion. All in all I’m quite happy with the results. I’m very impressed with the double sided Venev stones. The narrower profile of the Ursa’s helped with the curve, but being a fairly sharp curve I’m sure round stones would have been a better choice. For a standard recurve blade I’m sure the Ursa’s would be just fine. As far as the Hapstone system goes I can’t say enough. A nice piece of kit👍

Do a 2 step sharpening and treat it like 2 different knives, completely finish off the normal section first then sharpen the little hawkbill section and Venev Curved Gemini stones - link below. Treat it like 2 separate knives.

But it seems like you've already been quite successful with your Ursa set! :)
