Sharpening a hollow ground, tanto, chisel edge!!!

What a pain! I have an X-42 Autoclip. I like the looks and feel of the knife but this blade is distressing me. This is my first chisel ground edge and I'm having trouble sharpening this edge. I have a Lansky and a 204 Sharpmaker.

I think I've overcome the tanto problem (sharpen as two separate edges), but I can't get a good edge on this chisel grind. I can get a decent wire edge but that won't last long.

I understand that this knife is an older one, and the new X-42 Autoclips are double flat grind. I'm starting to think that would be better for a novice sharpener like me.

Hey Greg,

Sorry for the frustrations. Sharpening is an acquired art...one I've not yet perfected. Vinny is the only one I'll let touch my knives.

I've read your post a couple of time and I'm not exactly sure what you're struggling with.

The BG-42 steel is hard and will be difficutl to sharpen. But it will hold and edge for you for quite some time.

You may wish to give our Consumer Services Department a call at: 888.SOG.BEST.

Ron,
I was having trouble sharpening the chisel ground edge since the angle of that grind doesn't correspond to either of my 2 conventional sharpening systems. I have a Lanskey and a triangle sharpmaker.

I posted my concerns in the GD forum and got some advice on the proper technique from another board member. I would however, like to hear any advice from you regarding your BG-42 steel and the particular grinds on this knife as to the best method for sharpening it.

Ron,
I have officially trashed the edge. I just don't have the skill to free hand this knife. I'm sure it can be done, I just can't get it. The angle at which this chisel ground edge is ground (flat on one side steep angle on the other), doesn't correspond to either of my 2 sharpening systems listed above.
I don't have any trouble putting super sharp edge on any of my other knives, BM, Spyderco, Ka-Bar, Buck, CRKT etc.

Somebody mentioned that you offer this X-42 Autoclip with a double flat ground edge instead of this chisel grind. Is that true? Can I send this knife in for a blade replacement or should I just throw this one away and buy a new one due to the cost involved?

I really like this knife except for the chisel ground edge.

Hi Greg,

Again, I'm sorry for your frustrations! If you'd like, you can return the knife to SOG and we should be able to put a grind on the other side of the knife. That should help you out. Vinny is the guy who does this work for us and he is truly amazing!

Drop me an email and I'll give you return instructions.

Ron,
My X-42 Autoclip was shipped last week to your shop. I am anxiously awaiting it's return.

Regardless of whether you put a new blade in or re-grind the old one, I'm very impressed with your customer service. I doubt too many other companies would do that for some dummy who screwed up the blade like I did.

Many thanks,

Greg Wight
