Just got a Blackwinds Bengal on friday, wondering how to tough up the edge when I dull it. I have stones, sandpaper, files, and the spyderco sharpmaker.

Any tips on method and angle? I can get a pic up in the next day or so if you need.

I've lurked a bit in here, reading mainly. Just bought the bengal for a bush sword, tossing a bag together... figured I may as well learn how to sharpen this type of blade as well.

14yrs freehand experience, but thats all normal pocket and hunting knives.

20" blade, 26" oal short sword made by Ontario Swords, 1095 steel, recurve and then out to a broad tip the dips a bit below the handle

I've got the very same sword tucked away somewhere. My advice would be to keep a pretty steep edge, like 25/30 degrees on a side--sharp enough to cut skin but not shave hair. Mine, at least, is fairly soft, and my first edge (very thin) didn't stand up well to cutting mats. How do you find the handle? I had to do a few more layers of cord-wrap before it was comfortable for me, but I've got big hands.

Can't remember which one I've got. Was your edge the original, or after you thinned it? I need to thin mine so it will bite a little better. Same on the handle also. This was my first cord wrapped handle so I was impressed, but still needs some work.

No, it was my edge. The factory edge--wasn't. ;) My first edge was at the same angle that an old katana that I have is (probably 20 degrees on a side) but would roll almost instantly when it me any kind of solid material. I just ground that one off and put on a much steeper grind...about as sharp as a $5.00 machete, though ground more evenly. One does have to admit, it makes a fast sword. :)

I'm most likely going to rewrap the handle with my 1/4" braided cotton rope. Did that on my cheapo waki and it works great. I can ses this thin handle getting uncomfortable for long sessions.

after all the reading I've done on sharpening khuks now I think I'll knock the edge into about a 50-60(inclusive) and then convex the edge(done on a few production knives) by hand.

it worked great pruning a tree in my buddy's yard, but we didn't hack the larger branches. this was only to see about balance.
