Sharpening a Long Blade

I've managed to get two unsharpend long swords - 34-36" blades. I have files, dremel tool, and even a small belt sander. I'm not looking to put on the proverbial razor edge - just something workable. Does anyone have some advice on the best or most practical method of sharpening the swords?

When you say small belt sander are you talking about a hand sander or a table model? A table mount belt sander will save you hours of labor. Just be carefull or you can mar the surface of the blades or damage your heat treatment. You might put some adhesive tape on the sides of the blades for protection.

I have used a file to great success (and often with painful cuts in the process). I like a 12" mill bastard cut file for sharpening machetes. It leaves an edge that slices very agressively.

Jeff:

It's a small one inch belt desk top model. I suspect the file may be the better alternative - I'll wear gloves! Thanks.

Good opportunity to ask here: if I was going to use my 2"X46" craftman belt sander to put an edge on a blade, which grit would ya'll suggest? Also (this is a loaded question), how much skill does it take to put on a decent edge in this manner? Is this something that takes a great deal of practice, or is it relatively simple?

Thanks...
