Sharpening a Native

Okay, it's been a while since I've done this (I didn't bring my sharpmaker with me to school last year, nor did I bring most of my collection, so sharpening isn't something I've done in a while) but should a Native be sharpened using the 30 or 40 degree settings on a sharpmaker? Well, I guess the real question is whether I can sharpen it using whichever one produces the thinner edge since I'll want to get it as sharp as possible while still being able to keep the edge.

Hi Simon. The CPM-440V in the Native is normally sharpened at the 40 degree angle. Many feel that the thinner 30 degree is too thin for the 440V, thinking that it is too thin for the steel and it might chip. I personally sharpen my CPM-440V blades at 30 degrees and have had no problem. Sorry it is not a definitive answer, but little in the knife industry is definitive.

Hi Sal. I have the same question concerning the Chinook:
1. is it originally (out of the box) sharpened at 30 degrees?
2. should one sharpen the Chinook's blade at 40 degrees since the blade is stronger and thicker than the Native's blade. Or, maybe, the MBC philosophy prefers the thinner edge?
Regards,

Franco
