Sharpening a Paramilitary

I'm sure this has been asked many times but... I've used my S30v Paramilitary enough for it to be slightly less than the factory edge at this point. I have the Sharpmaker and the ultra fine rods. What would be the best technique using the Sharpmaker to bring the edge back to the factory spec? Or is it even possible with those tools? I can follow the sharpmaker instructions as is, but I'm concerned that it won't give me the same angle as what it had. I'm even more concerned that I'll make it worse. I haven't done so well with S30v so far. And yes I know I can send it in or have someone else sharpen it, but I want to learn myself. Thanks.

If the para still has a decent edge on it then I would skip using the coarse stone and skip ahead to using the corners of the fine stone. Do about 15-20 passes with it on the 40 degree edge setup and then do 15-20 passes on the flat side of the fine stone on the 40 degree edge setup. Good luck and use those safety guards

+1

Dont use the gray stones, just the white.

Set them up in the 40 degree slots and do a few passes on each side. Test the edge on your thumb after each pass until you are happy.

The less sharpening the better!

The important thing is to keep the knife straight as you go down the stone, starting at the base and drawing towards you as you go down (the Sharpmaker video makes it very easy to get right). Sharpening the Para is very easy due to the shorter blade.

With S30V it is always best to keep your blade touched up and sharp. If you allow it to go blunt it is a bear to sharpen. I bought a custom knife in S30V that the previous owner had not kept sharp about half an inch from the tip. This was my greatest sharpening challenge! I used gray stones and white on the stand and then resorted to free hand with the gray stones and then touching up with the white on the stand. It was hair-raising stuff but I am almost happy with the results.

The beauty of S30V is that it is bitch hard and tough. So when you get it in a nice thin edge profile like the Millie or Para it cuts like nothing else!
